I find the Winter Olympics fascinating, but a bit overwhelming, to be honest. The events are so fast and intense, and there are so many of them, that I don’t know what to watch and when. I want to be surprised (who knew curling could thrill?) yet I don’t want to get stuck watching a quick-moving event that is over before I am able to grasp the rules (Two-man luge?).
I was excited when I learned that Yahoo! has a new module that will help clear up my troubles. The new Yahoo! Sports Olympics Coverage app gives you a little bit of everything: photos, video, news with brief and dynamic updates.
Want to know if Lindsey Vonn is actually going to compete or not? Check the module. Want to watch a short video of an event you’ve never heard of. Check the module. The outrageous outfit that a figure skater plans on wearing? It’ll be in the module, so you don’t have to look elsewhere.
It’s quite wide for a My Yahoo! module but that’s easy to accommodate by playing with the column layout of your page. Simply go to the “Change Appearance” tab on the upper left, choose “Change Layout” from the dropdown list, and try out the various column arrangements. You can also drag and drop it anywhere on your page by clicking and holding the mouse button on the title bar and dragging the module anywhere on the page. You can fine-tune by clicking and holding the space between columns and dragging the columns to just the right width.
I’m hoping to catch highlights of the events I know, learn a thing or two about ones I don’t know anything about, and follow the non-athletic drama as well – without wasting my time.

Winter Olympic Reflections
Finally I had a day off to catch up on one of my favorite things….. The Winter Olympics.
I just love the story lines, the drama, the upsets, the sure things, and my favorite… those “once-in-a-lifetime ‘OMG moments’ that are forged when an athelete’s years of hard work finally intersect with their special moment in time. We, as fans, are fortunate and privledged to share this moment with them. I watch in awe as their destiny unfolds and is shared with the world in ultra-dramatic fashion.
The facial expressions, the body language, and physical reactions of the atheletes, which are induced by the results of their competition, reflect backto us, not only the joy of their accomplishments but also the sorrow of their defeats.
This rare glimpse into the emotional vaults of others, these poignant momens which are litterally dripping with tears of both happiness and anguish, while the mountain peaks seem to echo their triumphnt cries of victory and the quiet snow fall mimics the silent disbelief of their failures. These moments capture the essence of life and embody what it means to be human, to laugh, to cry, to rejoice, to feel. This is why I have a love affair with the Winter Olympics.
