I served seventeen months in West Germany, and stayed mostly on Post (pulling guard duty), or in the field, so I never had much time to learn any deutsch. When I re-upped for West Berlin's F Co.40th Armor "Patton", Berlin Brigade, (the only US Armor unit to serve 110 miles behind enemy lines), things changed in quite a dramatic fashion. I found a Taxi driver that wanted to learn/improve his English vocabulary, and I wanted to learn his. So we each would learn ten words of the other's language, then correct each other on the weekends at dinner. It was less than a full summer, but I got to the point that I could read, write and speak the native tongue fairly well, at least I could pick up a newspaper and select enough of the words to give me a pretty good description of whatever article that I happened to be interested in.
So I believe that a word a day in any language is quite useful in the long run. I hope to start seeing other languages listed as well.
